I was wondering the exact same thing. I actually am looking into the possibility two sun roofs in my 92X, one over the front seat and one over the back seat. I am worried about the durability and/or possiblity of leaks. So i'm looking for some ideas, and looking for someone in the NW that can do quality custom fab work like that (cuz i don't trust myself to go cutting wholes in my roof haha).
I installed a sunroof on my first car and don't advise it. I never could get it to quit leaking. If you want to get a professionaly installed unit Webasto makes the best roofs I've seen. http://www.webastoshowroom.com/20Ford_main.html Good Luck.
Did some looking around. I actually found a shop locally that has been doing after market sunroofs in various cars, including an explorer, for over 16 years. They also gaurantee no leaks and free service for as long as you own the vehicle. Doesn't sound like a bad idea....we'll see .
The last quote I rec'd was $400 and that was everything powersliding sunroof, installation, new headliner and warranty. That was for an Altima never priced one for the Explorer. Also a cool alternative is a powersliding ragtop. Here is some pics of an install in a Ranger hopes this helps. http://www.rangerpowersports.com/forum/renovation.php?do=show&rid=14 Also I would like to point out unlike sunroofs these ragtops are available as DIY kits
