I have a 2001 Ford Explorer Sport with the premium audio system. I don't want to replace the stock 6 CD changer head unit...I want to keep mostly everything stock. However, I was wondering how many watts does the stock amp put out to the stock subwoofer so I can get a proper line output converter that can handle the load. I'm looking to add a Kenwood 1800 Watt amp with two Alpine Type R 10 inch subwoofers.

The line output converter usually connects to the signal lines going from the head unit to the amp. If you try to attach it to the line out from the amp going to the stock sub, there is good chance you may blow the converter from too much power. Someone else may chime in to confirm that it is right or wrong, seeing as I am a novice, not an expert in this area.

However, I have tried a line out converter for the exact reason you are with much frustration and little luck. I did get it working a few times, but the signal was much too low I believe and barely drove the subwoofer to the point where you could barely hear it.
I have come to the acceptance that I will have to get an entirely new Head Unit in order to get the sub tuned in and sounding the way I would like it to.

Good luck
