Advice about paint flaw in new Ex?

Plumbago, no, mine is sterling gray metallic. We have had a great experience with ford getting it fixed, no complaints. It sounds like are not having the same good experience?

Chrysler or Chrysler dealers? I'm curious since it is very much common practice for dealers to fix stuff that happens on the lot and never disclose it to buyers. They employ people who come to the lot at regular intervals to just take dings and stuff out of cars.

To the OP, remember that when it comes time to sell the car, savvy buyers can tell with the use of a paint meter whether or not a panel has been repainted. If they do this, they can make the incorrect assumption that your vehicle was in an accident.

This is one beef that I have with insurance payments after accidents. If the car is worth $10k and has $3k worth of damage, they pay you $3k to fix the car. Unfortunately, this only brings the value up to whatever amount someone will pay for a damaged / repaired vehicle, which is almost always lower than the $10k in this example. It seems to me that you should be compensated to bring you full whole, which should include an amount for the depreciation that was also caused on the vehicle. But I'm completely digress...

The point is it's great that they fixed it, but it's still annoying, IMO. As for the hood damage, I think that one, as mentioned by others, is going to be hard to prove. Is it something that could have been caused by something while you were driving?

+1...I couldn't possibly agree more!

Thanks for the support guys. Ford now says to fix the car they have to repaint the whole top and hood, about 1/3 of the car. If I'd wanted a repaired repainted vehicle I'd have bought a used car.....so if you are taking delievery look it overy closely.....I'm stuck, and not at all happy....and now as for Ford it's easy to see why they no longer use the slogan: " Quality is job one at Ford"...........best regards Plum

Chrysler Corp. I believe that damaged vehs were repaired with Chrysler's ok and then sold without the new owners being told of the fixes.

update: The cost to totally replace the hood is $2407. They cannot say for sure the damage happened there or not - nobody fessed up to it.

They would though, offer a $300 paint job we want done tossed in for free, along with car rental for free if I do an insurance claim to get the hood replaced.

I have a $500 deductible. So, I'd be paying say, $200 really - if insurance would pay for the replacement. I am afraid they might just want repair but am unsure.

Any insights here?

Just how big are these dents that they want to replace rather than repair?? The hood is aluminum. Is that difficult to work with?
If they are willing to do 'free stuff' for you, I wonder how much they will bill your insurance company for?

So here's the wrap up...

Geico called it under Comprehensive, which I have just a $250 deductible. THe body shop put on a brand new hood, and painted my front grill sterling gray metallic, and gave me the rental car for free. The total bill was $2,500ish. I just paid my deductible. So, although the situation should have NEVER happened in the first place, I got my grill painted like we liked, and the quote for that was $300. So hey, I got a deal I guess. Sorta.

OH WELL! I have learned a lesson. and so has the body shop. But I do like my grill painted!

that sucks, but being a highly metallic color, it's going to be impossible to repair that spot and get it to match. even if you repaint the whole door you'll always notice a difference. you could have the entire side of the vehicle repainted, but that invites another whole set of potential problems, especially at a dealer's body shop. my advise is to try to live with it if you can. maybe you can get the dealer to do something else for you to ease the pain? the problem with metallic paint is that it's affected by too many variables (temp, humidity, angle of spray, paint batch).

Hehe, I think you missed the part where the work has already been done... and as long as the OP is happy, well, the OP is happy :)

yea i guess i did. too many posts to read through. like you said, as long as the OP is satisfied with the result, great. i've had too many bad experiences with paint repairs on metallics.

I agree, they can be very challenging to match, and that includes out of the factory too. I can't count how many bumpers I have seen on cars on the lot that don't match the rest of the car.

Hey no problem, it is a lot to read! Yes, they painted the door, for free via ford. Did an amazing job. This place is really excellent....except for the whole dent part.... Lol... My boyfriend used to work at a Porsche shop, and knows about body shops and paint jobs. Even he signed off on their work, which says a lot. I had to bring a different car back to a different place TWICE because it wasn't good enough.

Glad it all worked out! :)

Glad you're satisfied. Personally I think the car should have been replaced. When you go to trade anybody will use their meter on the paint and say that it has been wrecked making it worth considerably worse.

I don't see the logic in that. It is a new hood that was painted. Why would a meter give you a different reading than what the original would have read. Beside that, I've traded in many vehicles and never was a meter used on the trade in. If a proper records search was done on the vehicle it would not come back with any info on it being in a wreck.
I had a stone chip on the hood of an '06 Highlander I was leasing. It was in a spot where it really bothered me so I took it back to the dealer's body shop and had the hood repainted. Nothing what-so-ever was said about it when I returned it at lease end.
