Good morning folks,
I guess for the last few days I have been combing through a few of the extensive threads on some things I'd like to change on my explorer. A bit about my vehicle.... it's a 2000 ford explorer with the 5.0 AWD option. In the last 6 months or so, I have decided that instead of building a truck, I'd toss that budget into the Explorer. So here is the questions and opinions part.
To change it from the AWD, I was planning to do the tcase swap. But ended up more confused than when I had started. Reading between threads on the electric shift and the manual shift. So the question I have is, when upgrading the tcase with a tight budget in mind, what is the best option to go with? Along with the tcase swap I am rebuilding my rear differential. How hard is this job to do being that I am rather new to this type of modifications. I am mechanically inclined. But at times the technical terms lose me. In the differential, I have 3.73 gears which I am planning to stay with. Since I don't really know the benefits of other gearing that well.
I know there are a million posts on here to battle each point and for the ones I have read, the posters do a very good job at it. But again... this guy isn't so together when it comes to that stuff. I have read a number of posts on her as well as a few other places.
For the people that have gone from AWD to 4x4. What was the biggest issue that you encountered in your swap? What are the things that you would have done differently? Outside of the obvious fitment issues, what are a few other issues I should watch out for?
I saw the whole build list of one member from when he had done it. But I am also trying to gain a bit better picture of what and how to do it without paying someone to do it and then watch, or not know what's happening should something break let along try to fix it.
