I'm looking at buying an 02 Mountaineer. I have heard 02 was one of the worst years for Explorers and Mountaineers. Is this true, and if so why? Anyone with any experiences with this vehicle?

Totally true, bad transmissions. Very expensive to repair.

the transmissions are garbage and the 4.0's still suffer from the timing chain issues.

This one is the V8. Does that make a diffrence or are those bad to?

They all mate to one of the 5r55 series transmissions which are trash. At 59K on my 2003 I had to have the clutch packs and shift solenoid replaced, and then at 85K when it got totalled it was starting to give me the symptoms again.

With that being said my mom is approaching 100K miles on her 04 Aviator (uses same transmission) with zero problems.

I thought the V8's had the 4r70 trannys like the 2nd gen explorers had. My 97 is over 200000 with zero problems. Why the hell would Ford use that tranny instead of the good ones is beyond me. It's probably why the pricks selling it so cheap.

Nope, it's the 5r55. For whatever reason they opted to move to a 5spd when the switched to the 2v 4.6L.
