I have a 99 Eddie Bauer Explorer, 5.0, AWD w/ 185,000 miles.

I went for an oil change last month and they said it needs new shocks. That combined with some other minor issues: driver seat belt latch, rear wiper motor, passenger window switch and a worn out driver seat adds up to a pretty good chunk of change even if I do much of the work myself.

I've always changed the oil every 3K and transmission every 40K among other maintenance.

It seems like a lot of little things failing at once. My question is how long should/could this truck run and is it worth putting $1500 in to a truck worth about $5000.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Those are all really minor things for the mileage. If you maintained the truck you can expect to get another 100K out of it. Other minor issue will come up. Shocks are wearable items and need to be replaced every 60K. My sisters Ex has 250K with OEM shocks on it...just depends on how bumpy of a ride you can take.

My vote is do what needs to be done. But if you do get shocks DONT GO CHEAP! I went cheap-o on mine and they SUCKED! Gets some good quality Monroe or KYB shocks.

that honestly depends on what you want, if your wanting something different, then don't put the time and money into it. even if you make it nice if you wanted something new before, most likely you will still want something different afterward. If your wandering if it is worth it to put money into a car with 185k on, i think your fine. It sounds like you have been taking care of it and that always[ helps it run for a while. Most of that stuff isn't really that expensive, because you can use used parts for a lot of that stuff like the seat and seat belt. i suggest looking in junk yards for that stuff. there is a great website car-parts.com that will help you search junk yard. most of those jobs aren't really that hard either. I think you could do all of that work for less than 1,500. With that said if it were my truck i would do the work and keep it.
