Yesterday I had an odd noise coming from under the hood. Sounded kind of like I was popping popcorn under the hood, thats the best I can describe it. It got progressively louder until I hit a bump in the road when it stopped. The moment it stopped the battery light came on, the dash lights went dim, the power steering went out and I smelled burning.

I pulled over and popped the hood and saw no smoke but could smell it still. I was able to drive it home despite almost having to break my arms to steer it.

Can anyone give some ideas on what I need to be looking for?

Forgot to add that by the time I got home the temp gauge was running hot and the check engine temp warning came on the center console screen.

I found that the belt (the only one under the hood afaik) attached to the alternator is tore up pretty bad and one of the smaller pulleys is bent up as well.

how bad did it over heat?

The bearings on the tensioner pulley and another pulley went bad. The one pulley shot into the fan while the tensioner stayed half-way together and where it should be. I was able to fix it myself once I got the corrects parts together.
