Well, like the title says....after 11 years and 180,107 miles later, I finally had to break down and get the water pump changed. A couple Thursdays ago right after the big Houston snow storm happened, I started to lose coolant in my overflow tank. I filled it back up, but the next day, it was gone again. I didn't notice and coolant anywhere on the engine, so I ran some coolant die through it to see if I could find anything. After a couple days (while checking the oil daily for milkyness), I finally found it coming out the water pump weep hole behind the alternator. So, off she went to my buddy at a Ford dealership to get a new life. Now, she's like new again :D I should be able to get another 100,000 out of her now.

The engine needs to come out for the water pump to be replaced?

Wish our water pump lasted that long, on our 2.3 it went at 65k.

On mine it went out at 44k!

The 2.3L engine doesn't have an internal water pump. To replace the internal pump, the engine doesn't have to be removed.

 Interesting that they drop it all the way out, instead of the way most amateurs do. I wonder if that's actually quicker.

From what I've gathered from reading the threads on water pump replacements, dropping the engine is not a routine matter, even at the dealerships.

I do know the Ford Service manual states to "drop" the engine / trans for the water pump and also for a timing job.

I also know that the shop I use, doesn't drop the engine. Quicker not too.
