Replaced the transmission last yeara. Transfer case leaks like a sieve. It leaked a lot of fluid overnight after filling the tranny with fluid. It's the joint between the tranny and the t case. Gasket is new, but cheap paper crap. Thinking of just using rubber sealant and spraying away...thoughts?

So I was looking up there and it looks like the ATF that leaked the night before must have ran all the way to the end of the trans and dripped there. The T case gasket still doesnt hold the fuid, but my guess is that it was due to the leak before.

Still leaks fluid. Should I spray sealant on the joint where the T-Case mates to the Trans?

Leak In-Between?

The trans. output shaft is sealed with an oil seal. The transf. case input shaft is sealed with it's own oil seal. One or the other is leaking, which puddles oil in the cavity within the adaptor casting. The gasket's purpose is to keep dust out, which affects those seals.

You need to determine if possible, which seal is leaking, and replace it. Otherwise, replace them both. imp

4WD transmissions have no rear seal. The extension housing area is wet, lubed by th eorifice puck in the valve body.

I think that paper gasket is all that is sealing up that joint. I know that cavity is wet with an automatic transmission (its dry with a manual) and there's nothing besides that gasket.

Oh, makes sense. It barely leaks, but it does. It wasnt before I removed both the transfer case and tranny...

So it is supposed to be wet all of the time, but no leaks should be present? Thanks

So it's a dust gasket...makes sense now. Paper would water proof anything anyways. :D TY.

No, it's not just a "dust gasket", it's all that's keeping the transmission fluid from pouring out the back of the tranny.

The transfer case is sealed so unless the input shaft seal on the transfer case is bad, any fluid in that cavity is from the transmission.

Ok thanks. Appreciate the replies.

4X4 Rear Trans. Seal?

My Ford Shop Manual clearly shows the two extension housings used, one for 2WD, the other 4WD. The 4WD housing which mates the trans to the transfer case SHOWS an oils seal sealing the transmission output shaft.

What do you think of that? imp

Sounds like thats right. I'm pretty sure this leaking is from the T case, the tranny has new seals and everything all around. Guess I'll have to live with it unless I can find a cheap Transfer case

Post the image imp, I would like to see that. On a 5R55E the seal is RWD only.

My Mistake!

My error! Sorry! The pic I have is an exploded view of 5R55S, not E. My apologies! imp
