Hi everyone: I am looking into getting a lmtd slip, installed in my '99 sport. a few people have gotten back to me and have suggested the auburn (standard system),however every place that I have spoken to has told me that the auburn cannot be rebuilt.and I should get the eaton. anyone know about the two systems.
thanks,
Billy

I'm not familiar with the Eaton, but I have 75,000 on my Auburn, and it still works great!

Bill,

It is true that the Auburn cannot be rebuilt, but chances are that you won't need to. It'll last a good long time. RangerX's report of having 75,000 miles on his is part of the testimony that got me to buy one.

I'm not familiar with the Eaton limited slip differential, but Eaton does have a decent reputation as a company. I didn't know that they made a unit for the Ford 8.8". You could try to check out their web site to see if you can get some specs on their limited slip, such as breakaway torque and bias ratio.

If I'm not mistaken, I remember reading that clutch plate style units like the standard Ford traction-loc tend to wear out rather quickly, but they can be rebuilt which essentially involves replacing the clutch pack and spring(s). I don't know anything about the wear characteristics of the Eaton.

You may want to check out some Chevy forums as I think that Eaton may be more popular with GM products. If I'm not mistaken, Eaton make the Gov-Lock differential which used to be available on many GM products under the trade name, Positraction. Now days, Positraction seems to be tossed around to describe all limited slip differentials, but the name does belong to GM and probably Eaton.

Bill,

Before you decide, check out their web site, I think it's www.auburngear.com . Look at both the OEM section and the aftermarket section. It will give you just a little more information before you make the decision. The pro isn't just for track use, as far as I can tell.

Hi Guy's, Iknow I said I was going for the auburn,I did however order an Eaton today,it has some very nice features, one of them,it can be rebuilt,it uses carbon fiber for the clutch disks,it has an iron case, this is a very new Diffe on the market.I phoned up just about every place I could get a # for
and they all told me the same thing, get the Eaton, from what we hear,it's the hottest thing out there, and it was cheaper than the auburn, and this has 4 very strong springs inside,I just ordered some royal purple gear oil(75/90) synthetic it will work with the Diffe without any problems.the oil has a GL-5
rating.
Wish me luck, and thank's everybody!!

Hey Bill,
Make sure you take lots of pictures of the Limited slip and if you can pictures of the install.
that along with the specs of it would make a great write up for the products review. Hint! Hint! Dead Link Removed
