I need to get a new exhaust, mine has a hole rusted in the muffler. Instead of just getting a stock one, I was thinking about getting an aftermarket one. I want an exhaust that is deep. I am not expecting to get a V8 rumble out of my ohv v6. I dont want it to sound ricey, I heard that they can get that way at higher RMPs.I was looking at the flowmaster 50 force II kit, anyone have any thoughts about this kit, or should I go with the 40 series instead? Or maybe another exhaust that anyone can suggest?

my opinion would be to not get a kit. i would go with a 40 or 50 series (50 being quieter than 40) muffler and have a shop bend tubing for you. youll have a custom job at the same or less price compared to a kit.

After reading all the flowmaster threads around here I'm sure I'm the only one runnin a Series 30 two chamber muffler. I wanted to be heard.......I wanted a good rumble at idle.......and I wanted enough back pressure so I wouldn't lose MPG at the same time. The Series 30 is the way to go. Although there not near cheap but you'll get the sound. :)

30 series? never even heard of that one..... the 40 series is the original 2 chamber

I never did either until my local shop told me about them. I have one, my buddy has one on his Ranger, and my girlfriend has one on her Mazda pick-up. All perform well.

If I remember right I paid something stupid like $190 just for the muffler. I know......stupid ars!!!!! I like loud........what can I say??? :)

I have the Force II cat back. I got the kit because pretty much everything after my cat was rusted out so I had to replace all of it. It's a very good exhaust. High quality, and very easy to install (About 30 - 45 mins.). Very quiet though. Only slightly louder than stock, but has a great low, mellow tone to it. What really got me though was the performance increase. I noticed better acceleration, along with much more throttle response. Hope this helped. Later.

I can't recommend anything other than the Super 40...

I get "Thats the best sounding 4.0 I've ever heard!" from people all the time..

Update:
Well its been a long time since I posted this but I just wanted to give you guys an update. I eventually got a flowmaster 40 series, I believe its delta, cant remember. I went to a local shop and had them put it on. Let me tell u it sounds awsome. Its sounds like a v8. Everyone I talk to says it sounds really good.

What about Gibson cat backs?

I have a Gibson system on my 92. Replaced the rusted out stock for about the same $. Might have gained a wee bit of HP. Stainless tip option looks nice. There is no resonator, so it sounds a bit more buzzy - but what can you do about a V6 Fitment was OK, if you have oversize shocks / lift kit you may have some clearance issues between the rear shock and swaybar link.

First off let me say I know absolutely nothing about exhausts.

Ok after reading a whole bunch of posts on exhausts I am pretty sure I am going to go with the flowmaster 40 although I stillhavent figured out about this delta thing.

But I wanted to do headers as well, I dont just want a muffler, I want the best upgrades I can have. Can someone explain to me the benefits of getting headers, is this even possible for a 4.0 V6 OHV?

Is it a good idea, im not worried about the money I just want a good exhaust, and I want the HP increase and I want the sound.

can you guys give me a nudge in the right direction or suggest a better idea?

Thanks

I've heard that headers don't do much for the OHV V-6. I'm still going to put headers on mine when the stock manifolds break though!

Just had a cat back system installed on my '92 XLT at my local shop. Well, not really a system. New, higher-flowing muffler (not a Flowmaster) that still maintains enough back pressure for the 4.0 to perform as it should. Custom bent 2.25 pipe, basically in the stock configuration. Can't remember the name of the muffler, but talk with the guys at your local shop as they usually know their stuff and can help you out. Noticed a definite gain in power and mileage. Not sure if it's a result of the better flow characteristics or the loss of the 80 lbs that was the stock muffler, but whatever. Nice, low mellow rumble that's never loud or annoying, but is always there. And the best part????? $117.00 out the door........

Love my Gibson.

My local exhaust shop will install dual exhaust with two 40 series flowmaster and custom pipes for $292. What do you guys think about this setup and price? Are all flowmaster 40 the same or do they have different quality/price/style or whatever??

Oh ya.. I have a 98 x 4dr SOHC.

True dual exhaust isn't good on the V-6. You actually end up losing power. So I hear. When I do my exhaust I'm going with the flowmaster Force II catback system. It's only $180 from www.summitracing.com. I've heard only good things about it, plus it's supposedly really easy to install yourself.
