I'm looking for an new MAF for my 98 XLT, and about died when I got a look at the price for the Granatelli unit. Are there any other manufacturers out there that don't want an arm & leg for their MAF?

Most I have seen are in the range of 200-300+ for a known brand such as that. I have a Pro-M MAF, which is specifically calibrated fo rmy X, and even more specifically for my computer and to run with my K&N filter. I never really noticed any additional advantage with it and was never motivated to ge tone until I saw the Pro-M that can be customized and works well with my Apten chip, etc.

There have been a LOT of discussions lately on the pros and cons of aftermarket MAF units (Granatelli and Pro-M). Search the archives. Frankly, I can't see the point since the Ford unit seems to be more than adequate. If you can get an OEM unit for a decent price, you won't go wrong with it.

The Ford unit is 70mm in diameter, the same as the Granatelli and Pro-M. the difference is in the electronics. So if you can get your ECM to re-calculate, or dig into the MAF Sensor, there's no need to get an aftermarket one.

Thanks Guys, I think I'll take your advice and just pick up a new OEM version to go along with the K&N FIPK unit I just ordered!

Why do you need a new one? Did yours go bad already? You sure you don't need to simply clean it?

I'm sure that alot people that replace their MAF sensors with aftermarket ones, and think that the new MAF made a big difference, got the difference because they've replaced a dirty MAF with a clean one.

I would just about agree with Eneurb. I didn't notice a change at all. I only got my Granatelli b/c a fellow member on this board was selling it REAL cheap.
MAFs are worth it if you're going bigger injectors and supercharger route... from what I've read.

I am definitely going for the cleaning first, no question. Any particular cleaner better than another?

i noticed a slight difference when i first installed my MAF on my '92

after i put the throttle body on i noticed a great difference, not HUGE but the truck actually had some get up and go!

I don't like to use cleaner if at all possible, just a small artists paint brush. But if necessary, use electrical contact cleaner.

A larger MAF is ok if you install larger injectors. I can really feel the difference with the setup I have on my X.

NAPA/CRC sells electric sensor/contact cleaner in a spray can. Smells like alcohol and dries very fast. I just sprayed in on, let dry and put back in place.

That's probably because it is alcohol. I use alcohol and a Q-Tip. The filaments are fairly strong and will withstand a light rubbing with the Q-Tip. Easiest way is to take the sensor off the air box and work under a good light.
