Has anyone successfully installed/used an aftermarket transmission oil pan on a 4WD V6 auto without problems? I'm giving some serious consideration to buying one of the oversized aluminum ones, but all the ones I've looked at have warned about the possibility of interference with exhaust on 2nd-generation, and the prices are a little high for me to just take a chance and give it a try.

im not really sure how the exhaust would interfere, the pans are usually just deeper not wider?
It all really depends on how they made the pan for the extra fluid .. But personal I would get some aluminum and build my own pan or check out mag tech and call them to see what they say about your application..Also you can add an extra trans cooler or a bigger one and they will help lower temps and add some extra fluid..

Is there anything practical that can be done to modify the original pan I wonder? Something like welding finned heatsinks on the exterior?

I guess I may end up doing a cooler after all, but I'm incredibly **** about drilling new holes in my vehicle to mount anything, and also a bit concerned about leaks.

Some of the sohc motors have the driver side down pipe and cat under the tranny pan like the v8. I haven't seen an ohv 4.0 with this only a Y pipe setup. If you want a cooler and dont have one on your truck already take a look at a v8 setup, it would be a simple way to go I know 97 sohc rigs came with it and should just drop right in place.
