OK. its getting worse and I am out of ideas. My X shakes when holding steady speed at highway speed. REALLY choppy. I have done my plugs and wires on general measure.
ANY idea of what is going on here? could it be timing for some reason? It does smooth out when it downshifts. seems to be 2k rpm- 2.5k or so

are the drivelaines or the wheels tires all in balance?

that really is a comon sense question that I should have checked already. feels like something else but there is no reason to leave that out. not sure why it would go away when it downshifts if that were the case though. I will check that in the morning. Was thinking maybe something to do with the pullys, maybe harmonic damper?

Is this shaking different from the common first generation 65mph vibration problem?

I am not framiliar with the problem you are refering to. Just to clarify things here is where i am. All tires are balanced (had that checked today) this shakng goes away either when I totaly let off the gas or when I get on it enough to downshift. This makes me think motor issue. I just dont know what the hell would do that.

my 92 also had a severe vibration at approx 65 mph :(
i had ford dealership install the "fix". Its a heavy cast iron? disc attached to the transfer case and one side of the rear axle and also a 3rd shock attached to the rear axle. it helped a bit but it still vibrates at higher speeds.
try a search on VIBRATION and see what comes up this was a hot topic a while back

i have a 95 ex and on the highway i have the same problem currently im running 30x950 tires and i think its possibly because they are either unbalanced or they need to be aligned but i only encounter the problem from like 65 mph to about 75 then it will quit shaking

I hardly considder adding rotating mass a fix. Leave it to ford to do that. basicaly what they did by adding a heavy wheel to the case is make less of the vibration transmit into the wheels. This does not actualy stop the problem at all. Rather it is just being masked. I called a dealer about this and that seems to be the common fix.
More rotating mass = BAD.

I forgot to add that they also changed my engine mounts and I believe shifted the exhaust (not posivitive about the exhaust)

Possible answer

My truck use to feel like I was holding a machine gun, it was shaking constantly especially at higher speeds and come to find out my U=Joint by the tranny was bad so, I had the mechanic put 2 new U=joints in and the shaking stopped. This could be a start.:D

You already had the motor mount done, but try this to narrow down what's causing it.

Find out what speed and RPM the shacking starts.

Shift into a different gear to reach the same RPM, this will tell you it's motor related, if it only happens when you are going a certain speed then it's:
  • Tires
  • U-joints
  • drive shaft out of balance
  • front end linkage (ball-joints, steering gear, stuff, & junk in the front
