ok so what i have done is iv left a part of the airbox opened and left the two screws in to keep from moving around. is this a good idea or should i fasten it back down to the two plastic clamps? its got a better sound to it though, i kinda like that

i took a dremel to the bottom part of the air box and put in a k&n. It's basically like an open air, but being a panel filter, there is slightly less air flow than an open cone filter. Sounds wicked too and made a huge difference. I am quite satisfied for only spending some time and the amount for the filter. Although, I think due to excessive turbulence, somewhere around 4-5k rpm, there will be a slight lag. Also, i have the 4.0 SOHC.
