I was looking around at some performance sites and noticed that have air breathers for sale. What are they and what purpose do they serve? and Where would you put them on an Explorer if it is possible?
Here is a pic of them:

you can use them as crankcase breather filters. like if you installed a new intake tube...you would need a filter on the small tube that leads to the crankcase becuz it would no longer connect to your intake tube.

What's a crankcase?

You can extend your breather lines to keep water from getting sucked into your Xfer case, Tranny and front/rear diff..

I use those little filters as a raised breather for my axles and t-case because I go through deep water occasionally. There is really no need to use them on the engine because that is what the pcv valve is for on the engine. You can put them on if you want though.

I think I might put them on just for looks, where would I put them on the engine?

I used one when I did my intake tube. It was too hard to drill a hole in the intake so I just stuck one of those mini filters on the valve cover.

Where and how much are these filters? I would like a blue one on mine for no other reason than the looks. Kinda dress up th engine and show that I take care of her!! lol Along side my KKM and painted bolts I think it would look pretty good!

Be careful with those breather filters. Any unmetered air will cause a lean out in the air fuel ratio. There is some room to play stock, but the more mods you have the higher the risk of detonation. I went for about a year trying to figure this out on my mustang until I read it on Pro Flow's website, and bingo no more spark knock.

a crankcase is the engine.... it is where oil is contained...

I found those at godfathercustoms.com under the APC section but I still don't know where on the engine I could put them so it would be visible.

Its visable when hooked up to the valve cover... no point to doing it though. Looks kinda messy. :)

thats a valve cover breather, they are really for older cars that use an aftermarked air cleaner, like i have on the torino. those ones you have pictured there are very very cheesy looking, and if you really wanted one i would suggest getting a higher quality one from jegs.com or another classic car source.

here is the one i have, a Moroso white filter, chrome, heat shielded, its on the right valve cover, kinda hard to see, but thats where it goes
