Air Compressor "Siezed UP"

Alright, so a buddy of mine is a mechanic and is going to help me change out my air compressor on my 1996 Explorer (this will be the 2nd summer with no AC and I can't take it!).

I tried to just add some Sub-Zero to it last night, but the PSI on the low side was testing as it should so that wouldn't help. Also, the AC clutch will start to spin then stop. Start to spin then stop. Is that how the clutch should function or is this malfunctioning as well?

Are their other parts besides the compressor itself I will need to get?

Im confused- why are you trying to charge the system if the compressor is bad?

Someone told me that the oil that is in the mix, might lube it up well enough to get the compressor spinning again. So I thought I would give it a shot.

Can you turn the compressor by hand?

I will give it a try. Its been a downpour the past few days so havent had a dry moment to test...

The actual compressor itself I was unable to turn at all.

If the compressor did actually seize your going to need to replace everything & flush the lines Really good due to black death....If you don't know what that is... search

I believe your model has an orifice tube. You'll need to change it. If you flush the system it has to come out any way. Its a cheap part, too.

If the compressor is locked up you should not be able to turn the part on the front of the compressor that moves to lock the pulley to it. You should feel some resistance, but not finger loose or hard to turn.
