Sounds like you "air recirculation door" has fallen off it's hiinge points and is laying down in the blower box, just above the blower itself. The blower box is right behind the glove box. Use the search box at the top of the forum and type in "air recirculation door for a 2005 Explorer" and read up on the past posts on how to check and remove the broken air recirc door. It just involves removing 4 screws that are fairly easy to get at behind the glove box. To replace this air recirc door, is another story. It involves pulling half the dash out.
This just hit the main board "see link", it should be what you are looking for. Look at post #47 by "DallasFord" and his 3rd and 4th photograph.
