i just put a mac intake in my 96 and couldn't be happier. nice groan and definite boost. i have a pic in my gallery. it was $159 shipped form an ebay seller. i can get you his id if you want.

ps. for the pic, you may have to double click the red X if it shows

Isn't that the same ones that EE sells for $134 brand new?

ya, it direct, but i did have to do a little custom work. like bending the plate for the filter and the MAS so that the filter would face down more. and the infamous missing hole for the air temp. sensor. mac says some models have the pre-drilled hole and others don't. all i did was email mac and they sent me the appropriate grommet(real quick too) and i drilled my own hole. real easy. your model may not have this problem, but like i said no big deal. hold on and i'll get you his id.

x-factor, no it's not the same. my mac is part # 3640 for a 96 4.0 ohv. EE doesn't have that one listed. maybe they sell it but they don't have it listed.

his email is : alsoci@aol.com . i did not actually go through ebay, he sells on ebay and i contacted him about having a mac for my X and he sold it to me that way. i still used paypal.

Is there a difference with the metal tube or the plastic?

this has been talked about a ton of times with everybody splitting 50/50. you can do a search and read about it but you'll probably just end up where you started. all i know is that my SS mac is doing the job beautifully and when i pop the hood right after i drive it, i could completely wrap my hand around the tube, so i would say the cold air is working fine with a metal tube.
