Very easy job. First take off the top of your air cleaner box, take out the air cleaner itself then pull the bottom half out of the truck. It is in there pretty good so pull hard. If you can get your hand in front of the air cleaner box you might can pull it out without taking the bottom half of the box out. It looks like a cylinder in the front of the box. It fits in the front of the box. It is there to quiet the noise of the air coming into the air box.
Just wondered what year Explorer this applies to.. I have a '92 Explorer 4.0 and I wanted to yank that box out somehow rather and make my own cold air kit. I have already taken the silencer out of my Mustang and it seemed to help.
i just did this to my '99 the other day. i tried with all my might and couldn't get the bottom of the air box out. so finially, i took a screw driver and pushed it down into the hole where you can see the rubber plug thingieand just pulled up on the bottom of the air box and it popped out very easily. i dont really notice any power gains, just a throatier intake sound. this is only temporary because i'll be getting a kkm as asson as funds permit.
It takes some wiggling and movin around but I got the silencer out on my 98 SOHC without takin the box out. For me the sound didnt even really change.... I ran about .02 quicker in the 1/4, but it was cold that night so I dont think it helps at all. I ended up putting mine back shortly after because I had an rough idle at first startup, thought that might have somethin to do with it. Never bothered to remove it again.
