going home tonight it started to not move very much when hitting the gas and eventualy didnt move at all.

park, works
reverse, works
neutral, works
drive(overdrive), dead
drive(regular), works
2 & 1, both work

i would hate to have to add a new transmission to my list of parts. anything i can do? or is it all gonna go out soon?

It has been way too long since I checked out the transmission manual from the library, but I seem to remember that there is a specific condition that causes the "no forward gears in OD position -- other positions normal" condition. Maybe something with the forward clutch or something. If you can get a hold of a good manual and look at the troubleshooting section, I expect you'll see this condition described.

i found this:
Slipping?

No OD?

Rebuilding it every other day?

Contrary to popular belief the A4LD is A strong tranny....

With a Weak overdrive planetary,

It doesn't like high torque, 4 low etc.

well it doesnt really like anything,
thats why the idle is so low, because just dropping it in gear will shear the weak welds off the cage, same with shifting to drive while still going backwards

Once its sheared, depending on which race is ripped loose it will make most of the gears slip (feels like it dropped into neutral)

This slipping also puts stress on the OD servo causing its famous leak.

This slipping only occurs in (D),

if it slips in regular 'D'

you've got other problems, Burned out clutches, bands, seals, etc.

i cant remember if i did or not, but maybe i put it into d without completely stopping from reverse.
so it looks like i destroyed the od gear in there? i think ill just live with having no od gear, i can still use everything else. i know nothing about transmissions
