My x broke down the other day spilling coolant all over the driveway at my house. After searching for hours in freezing cold wethear i decided it was time for the experts to have a look. Low and behold they found the guilty party. It was my block heater!?!? Never new i had suck a thing and living in the south saw no need for one. Hole was patched x back to as good as new. But my real question is why would it be on there in the first place. The truck was origanly bought in Missippis and has never left the state? So why the block heater? Is this standard on all x's or was i just an odd ball out?

its probably something the dealer did... to my knowledge, explorers never came stock with a block heater... but iknow that it was a custom thing you could get from ford....

The block heater cost $35 to get installed at the factory :p

weird well at least now its gone and my truck is fixed!

The block heater now comes as standard equipment on new Explorers delivered to dealers in the northern SNOW-BELT states.

the block will have a heater on it.

I believe the block heater fits into the block where the freeze plug is on warmer-weather Explorers. For a gas engine, a block heater isn't necessary in Mississippi's climate, or St. Louis's, for that matter.

And even though the truck has spent its whole life in Mississippi, it wasn't built there. You can tell from the VIN code where it was built; maybe Louisville, KY like mine.
It's possible that those trucks built in northern plants (like the one in Michigan) get block heaters installed at the factory.
