Ford seems to have redesigned most of their other truck & SUV interiors since the current Explorer came out (F-150, Escape, Expedition). Have there been any rumours or estimates on when the current Explorer interior will be getting upgraded and redesigned? The current one is functional but boring and with these trucks costing $30,000 to $40,000+ ... it's time for some upgrades.
I know some of you don't like a floor mounted design shifter, but in this market where every single upscale SUV competing with the Explorer has the shifter on the floor (where a majority of folks prefer it), this option should be a must-do ad-on feature if the Explorer intends to continue to compete. Ford now offers the floor mounted automatic shifters in the new F-150 & Escape, just wondering if they will get around to upgrading the Explorer as well.
Also are there any hints as to when a redesigned Explorer body will be coming out?
Based on common patterns, a mild redesign will come in '06 and an all new model will be out in '09 or '10. Personally, I think the Ex's interior is pretty dang nice and Ford must be doing something right, as the Explorer is still the best-selling SUV by far. Adding the floor mounted shifter does sound like a good idea, along with adding the good ol' manual transfer case lever like the 4Runner and Grand Cherokee use. I wouldn't expect to see the floor shifter anytime soon though.
i hate floor shifters almost as much as my center console/arm rest. It's so hard to get ass when they're right smack in the middle of the car. Seriously.
