aloha all, new to the forum. i just got a 92 Explorer 4dr, 5speed. nice truck! unfortunately it has its problems as do all vehicles, but i can figure em all out with everyone heres help.

biggest problem right now is the roof has some nice rust spots. they have eaten all the way through and since its rainy season, it kinda sucks. bought some bondo today and gonna attempt to fix the issues up top when it dries up a little. only thing is the rails along the top seem to be riveted in... which is making it more difficult.

other issues is that the 4wd goes into high mode, but not into low mode. I think it might have something to do with the locks on the front wheels. do i have to twist those knobs to get it in 4wd low?

i also smell a burning smell when at idle, and when i stop for a while. anyone got any ideas on that...?

Welcome to this forum! The sticky threads on the top of the transmission section have a lot of information on the 4WD system. I guess you have manual hubs if you have a part that has to be twisted manually? Either way, this has nothing to do with 4H or 4L. This is related to the shift motor.

The 4wd issues could be several things, i'd start with the shift motor and figuring out if you have manual hubs. Does the truck leak any fluids? The smell could be transmission fluid from the main seal on the transmission(Auto Only). Mine use to smell and smoke if it sat for a while.

Welcome to the site! :)

The search function up top is your friend! Most of your problems have probably happened to someone before. Good Luck!
