had this problem since new-alt. gauge fluctuates usually when first start up. after 2 alternators-battery - starter-added ground cable engine to frame. thought it was poss. gauge but i finally checked it with a meter & sure enough the amps were going from 18 to 42--6 to 22 ect. at night time you can actually see the headlights going bright & dim slightly. i have never had a starting problem or dead battery. this does not happen all the time & does not effect anything except the lights.
