We've been having several problems with our 95 XLT. First, the OD sensor has been going off for the last 6 months. We reset the battery every time & it works for a while. We've taken it to several shops & no one can pin-point the problem. One mechanic told us the transmission needed to be replaced, another said it was an electrical problem and one couldn't find anything. The transmission did seem to feel a little more sluggish than normal but nothing too noticeable.

Then the alternator started to vibrate & make a clanking noise . Someone at Auto Zone advised that it was either the tensioner pulley or that the magnets in the alternator were broken. So we replaced the pulley which did not fix the vibration. So we then ordered the alternator part. Before we could get the alternator replaced, the OD light went off again & we reset the battery. When we turned the Explorer back on, we heard an electrical-type noise under the hood (like maybe something short-circuiting out). At first I thought it was radio static, but we could not locate any problems. The car seemed to be running ok and the OD light was off so we went ahead & drove the vehicle at that time. As fate would have it though, the alternator went out that very night and the Explorer died out on us. We then replaced the alternator & charged the battery back up. However, the voltage meter and battery were both registering low & so the Explorer died on us again. We then bought a brand new battery. That did not help either so we had the new alternator checked & it showed to be faulty.

Since then, we have installed 3 different (New) alternators & exchanged the new battery for a bigger battery. Both new & original alternators registered as faulty when checked after installation. It seems odd that 3 brand new alternators would register as faulty after being installed in the Explorer. So far - we've not had any luck on getting the vehicle operable again. Please help! Could there be something else causing the alternator to not work properly and drain the battery down? Has anyone ever had a similar problem? If so, what was the diagnosis & how much did it cost to repair. I'm not sure if the OD light and the alternator/battery problem are related but any insight you could shed into these problems would be greatly appreciated!

I think...That the OD light was comming on cause of the electrical problem. A bad alt. can cause this .
Cant help on the alt. problem but I guess you could have gotten some bads ones.
