Am I Nuts?

In my opinion the SOHC is a better engine IF the maintenance is kept up.
They have better power and fuel consumption than the OHV.

Just change the timing chain tensioners occasionally, it's possible to do it without removing much stuff and if the engine was rebuilt they should have used the better steel backed chain guides so maybe the intermediate chain won't be a problem either.

all I know is that it's quiet now. it will be well maintained with full synthetic oil and quality anti-drain-back filters. it will be driven gently and if it starts making chain noise the tensions and guide will be replaced immediately. I'm looking to get a minimum of 2 years out of this truck. that will be about 50k. if we can get more great, but after the first SOHC we had, I'm not very confident. I know that technically the SOHC is a more advanced engine design than the OHV. I swore I'd never own another one, but the price and condition of this truck won out. time will tell if my opinion can be changed.

she's a sweet little truck and with all the minor problems corrected she's cleaned up nicely.

It's a good idea to replace the tensioners regularly before the chains make noise.

You've got to avoid that high revving, chain thrashing thing they do on start up until the oil pressure builds up.
Having tensioners with good spring strength stops the chains from destroying the guides until the oil pressure is high enough to take over.

We don't get the Sport here. It looks like it would be fair bit lighter than a 4 door.

yes, I'm sure it is lighter and with shorter overhang no doubt better for off-roading.

Awesome! Woulda scooped that up myself. Also I wouldnt loan it to the bum, the bumper might end up bent again...:D

it's not a loan and it's not a gift. I'm trying my best not to become attached to it, but it isn't easy once I've worked on something. I do hate handing it over, but at least it gets him out of my pickup. I've warned him that it's got a lot of miles on it (not so many on the engine and trans, but everything else) and that he needs to treat it gently. I handed over the keys yesterday.

So it's a tax?

no, he's supposed to pay me back for it $100 a month. I doubt it will happen, but whatever I get is gravy.

Man, I feel for you.
My daughter it's only a teen now, but I am scared of the coming future :)

Man that would be nice with a v8!

bigger kids, bigger problems.

yeah, if he kills the motor and the body is still good... maybe. I wonder why Ford never offered the V8 in the Sport? the front is the same as the 4dr, right?

Yea I love mine, just get a 97 for a parts truck , it being 2wd would make it a fun ride
