And you though the SOHC had problems

I have a 99 SOHC with 150,000km with no problems at all! The Timing chain and intake gasket fix was done at 60000km and been fine since. The only problem ive had was a wraped front driveshaft and ball joints. thats it. However, before this i owned a 4.0 OHV which i needed to rebuild by 150000kms because of cracked heads so all in all i cant say the sohc is any worse than another egine. I think it comes down to driving style and maintenance! :D

Got an SOHC and love the engine. Pulls way harder than any other V-6 SUV i've ever driven. Got almost 80,000 and no problems whatsoever. There is a strange little whine at about 2K, but it's quiet, and actually sounds pretty cool. I'm not worried about it much because it's probably a lifter making some noise.

The SOHC is the standard V-6 in the X now, and I definitely respect he OHV for being such a reliable engine, but the SOHC is here to stay, and it is looking to be just as good, and pack a little more punch. You guys that doubt the SOHC need to go drive and tell me you don't geta grin on your face when that tach climbs to 6K and you feel it take off. I'd like to see another 6-cylinder do that reliably (Won't go into the GM I-6)

OHV, SOHC, V-8, they're all great engines. Let's stop arguing over whose engine is better. It doesn't really matter.

I truely believe that all of the threads putting down the SOHC are from people trying to justify whey their engine is better.

im sick of people saying "the sohc is crap. get the v8", because the majority of people who say that have absolutely nothing to base it on,
I'm with both of you all the way.
I won't try to justify anything, every engine has it's pros and cons when compared to another. I do have a good amount of personal experience with all 3 engines though, so I probably have a much more fact-based point of view than the majority of people here. I've owned a OHV, good truck. Had a couple of pet peeves about it, but otherwise just fine. Not a lot of driving experience with the V8 in an X, but plenty of experience in a Stang. On one hand, I never worried about the top end on the OHV or the V8. On the other hand, as for how smooth and quiet the engines are, neither will hold a candle to the SOHC I have now. The fact that I can beat a V8 and flat out daylight an OHV doing 0-60 is kind of nice to know though. :)
