annoying rattle in exhast...please read on.....

ok, i had a dual exhaust job done on my '99 sport....dual out behind the muffler, etc....now i have this awful, metal against metal rattling noise and i cant figure out what it could be...i thought it could have been the big tip hitting the metal bumper, cuz when i had the job done, i had been hit a week before, so the left side bumper was bent down a little, and the left tip was almost touching the bumper...so i figured maybe it was shaking and hitting it, making the noise..but i had my bumper fixed, so the tip isnt close to the bumper, but i still have this nasty noise....and it only happens once and a while, not all the time...seems to only happen at certain rpm's also...i have run my hand along both sides of the pipe going back all the way to the muffler, and i cant find a place where this noise could be comin from..but i know for a fact it is from the back left side in the exhaust..if anyone knows what this noise could be let me know...i havent had time to take it to the shop and leave it there for them to work on....thanks

When I had my exhaust done, the outlet pipe was barely touching the fiber heat guard at the highest point and it sounded like all hell was breaking loose. What a difference a quarter inch can make.

By any chance have you checked the heat shield? I know its not in the area you stated but it can make a nasty rattle.

Yeah I would check the heat sheild. It was loose on my truck. Made it sound like the whole damn thing was gonna fall apart. Got it taken off and haven't had any sounds since.

yea ill check that heat shield tommorow...man this sound is really horrid...and im sure if i have to take it to the shop, the sound will never happen for my exhaust guy when he trys to check it..isnt it always that way Dead Link Removed.........thanks

I bet its your license plate rattling. Same thing happened to me and I just padded it and the rattle went away. Since its in a certain rpm range something exterior is hitting a resonating frequency and I bet its your licence plate.

If it is coming from the rear on the left side(where there is no heat shield because the factory never ran exhaust on the left side) it is probably hitting your shock or something else in that area. Get underneath and look for a shiny spot or other obvious rub mark.

i got it out today and ran it up on the ramps, and there is no evidence of it hitting the shocks or anything else....i never thought of the license plate thing...also, this is really odd, but the rattle only happens when i have 3 or 4 people in the car..seriously....i have never heard it rattle with just myself in the car...i thought it was just by chance, but i thought it should have rattled a little when im by myself, but it never ever has happened...is there any reason why having backseat passengers would make it rattle??...sounds crazy, but i cant understand this.....

Paul is probably right. I had true dual exhaust (two mufflers) put on my Explorer and they ran the pipes awfully close to the outside of the rear left shock. At certain RPM's and especially at idle speeds (at stop lights) the exaust would start to rattle. There was real no much I could do except wait for them to rebend the pipe or lift up my rear end. I just got my leaf springs beefed up and rearched. Ever since , the exhaust doesn't hit the shock anymore. Check the shock one more time for rub marks.
