I've got a 97 mountaineer (same as an X) with full time all wheel drive and a 5.0 V8. It's got around 70,000 miles on it and the only mods I've done to it is swiss cheese the airbox and add a K&N filter. I'm getting around 13.8-14.0 miles to the gallon. That's about 260 miles on a full tank of gass until I'm almost empty. Is that about average for an AWD 5.0 ? I still have the stock O2 sensors, but I've cleaned my MAF and it didn't make any difference. I've been thinking about getting an aftermarket exhaust and maybe some high flow cats, will that help? Thanks

I just finished a bunch of city mileage and got 300 on the tank. Its on "E" but I havent filled up, so I dont know what the mileage will be. I usually average 18 city and 20 hwy with a best of 22 after my exhaust, cut air box, and synthetic oil.

How do you like your 40 series flowmasters? Is it pretty loud? I want an exhasut that will sound mean when I step on it, but hardly noticable when I'm going down the highway at 70mph.

You'll probably want the 50 series then. I can hear mine pretty good on the highway, but my other car is a Mustang with no cats and 40 series, so I wanted something a little loud. The 50 series will be relatively quiet at steady speed, but it will growl on acceleration.

I get 14.141 miles per gallon. 280 miles on a 19.8 gallon tank

I'm averaging 14.9 mpg so far. That's over the past 18 months. Also, try the Flowmaster Delta 50. I just installed mine today and it's great. Nice and quiet when I want it, but it'll wake up when called.

I get 21 on the road and about 16 in town. (no I'm not feathering the throttle either).

I've cleaned the MAF sensor, the screen that's there too, cleaned the intake temp sensor, the throttle body, changed the t-stat, new plugs (needs wires in a bad way), fresh coolant (PO changed it once in 100,000 miles, lots of West Texas mud in it) Other than that my OHV 4.0 and exhaust is all stock.

Short trips will kill the MPGs on any car.

Wow guys, I get crap compared to you's. With mostly city driving I get 11mpg, and thats with a light foot. On long highway trips, I get 20+mpg, and thats with 4 people and a cargo area full of luggage. I have 91k miles so far so I will be getting a tune up soon.

I've gotten as high as 23 mpg on the highway and as low as 11 in the city on my '97 Mountaineer 4x2. I usually get 13 in the city due to my heavy foot.

What gears do you have and what speed were you running? I have 3.73's and the best I have gotten was 22, with the cruise control on 75mph. I was also running the A/C. 23 is excellent for a V8.

15 at absolute best. Usually its around 12.
