Just joined the site, after months of browsing. I'm 22 and live in Buffalo, NY. Own a 2001 Explorer 4wd. My old man brought the truck up from Nevada in March of 08'. Odometer reads over 320,000! Brand new engine 80,000 ago and tranny rebuild with the engine swap (paperwork to verify). Unfortunantly my father was not the mechanical type and didnt notice that this truck was definantly in a collision and the shop he bought it from did whatever possible to fix it and get it off the lot.
First thing to go was the headlights and highbeams when the highs were switched on. Pulling out the MFS revealed exposed wires(corrosion) and the jumping of the highbeams into the headlight pin. Replaced that and the fuses, problem fixed.
Next the power windows stopped functioning. Lights are still on in the switches, so they have power. Had to run some juice from battery into the back of the master switch to get the windows up for winter.
Also the dome lights are out, dash display is very dim, blinker arm rotates almost 360 degrees(blinkers not functioning), and to top it off the tranny is shot.
O/D light started blinking, lag in 2nd-3rd shift, rpms max out at 40 mph. Fluid looks like motor oil and smells horrible. After a week no reverse. Truck is off the road.
After all that I still love this truck and am buying a used tranny this week. My buddy(proud owner of 96 explorer eddie bauer) and I are swapping a used one in, and I will be rebuilding the old one.
I am looking forward to religously browsing this site for months to come to assist me in my project. Thank You all in advance for the valuable information I have already recieved and will be learning.
