Another Noob With Problems

Hello all, What a great site. I have a '96 EB Explorer. It has been acting up for awhile now. It will, at random times, just not want to start. When it does start it will idle really rough. I feather the gas pedal until it clears out. Then it will run fine. It has the 4.0 and 112,000 miles on it. The only mod I've really done is put 32" BFG's on it. I know, kinda lame, but it looks good. lol. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Todd

Check the fuel pressure, and flow. If you can catch it when it won't start. you may find no fuel pressure. Pretty common fuel pump failures on Explorers.

Could also be the lower intake manifold gaskets if it's a SOHC. Do you know if your truck has a SOHC or an OHV engine in it? Should say right on top of the motor if it's a SOHC.

Welcome to this forum! The fuel pump relay or the PCM relay are common parts to break.

Thanks for all the welcomes. I looked under the hood, and all I saw was 4.0 EFI. I had it checked out once and he said the fuel pressure was good.

I am going to try both relays, I've also read that it could even be a weak battery causing this. Any thoughts?

Hey, I called Pepboy's and they have the fuel pump relay but have never heard of a pcm relay. Is there another name for that one or are they the same relay?

Sorry, soon as I read Pep Boys I knew what your problem is............yes, there is a PCM relay, and no it is not usually the same as a fuel pump relay.
