- 2002 Explorer XLT
Hi All, long time listener, first time caller. Been doing a lot of reading on the transmission in this fangled explorer. It's a relatively new-to-me vehicle. I recently had the AC condenser and the tranny cooler replaced as some nutbag had backed into the truck with a trailer hitch that buggered things up. Here's my question. I was mildly concerned when I took a bottle of mercon to my mechanic to make up for lost fluid in the replacement transmission cooler - and he didnt use it. So, today I did all the things to do to check the fluid level.
Vehicle Level (I didnt jack it up, had it level in my garage and just reached under to the drain plug)
Operating temperature (it had been driven)
Progressed through all of the gears, 30 seconds per gear, twice
Engine running
When I pulled out the inner plug, a crapload of fluid decided to come out with it. I mean, a LOT. If I did this right, it was seriously overfilled. Does anyone see any error in my process? I went ahead and pushed some fluid into it and let it drain back out, just to make sure it wasnt just a fluke. I have a generally good understanding of basic mechanics, but I'm not above asking. Thanks.
