Truck:
2001 Ford Explorer Sport trac. 200+ thousand miles.

Symptom:
Overdrive light woudl start flashing near end of "around town" errand trips.

Took truck to a local tranny shop for free diagonostics/inspection.

Was told:
Tranny code was Torque Conv clutch stuck off?

Was also told:
when they checked the fluid, they found there was antifreeze in it.

They can add an external Tranny cooler starting for around $100.
They also recommended they pull the tranny and replace the friction plates, as the antifreeze will corrode them, and while the tranny was down, might as well replace any other worn parts.

Ballpark on this would be around $2000 ($1200 labor, $300-$500 parts, $300 if new torque converter is needed).

Questions for you guru's:

Is it Antifreeze in tranny that bad for it?

could I be Ok if I just add the external cooler and then do a flush/filter??

It's been less than 1 week and less than 100 miles since the O/D light flashed and threw the code, so I don't think the fluid has been in there that long.

of course I am going to take the truck to a 2nd shop to get a 2nd opinion as well, but wanted to get the thoughts of people who knew explorers and weren't trying to make a few $$'s off me as well. =)

Thanks!

I guess what I would do is replace the radiator that's leaking, flush the tranny and cooling system and drive it.The worse that could happen is the tranny fails and you get to rebuild it anyway.

There will be ATF in the coolant also more then likely.:D

Safn, thanks for the reply.

That is what I have started thinking as well.

Instead of replacing with OEM, has anyone replaced with an aftermarket radiator or have any recomendations??

I've always been of the thought process, if you need to replace ,then its time to upgrade.
