Any Luck With 6x9's

Hello All,

I'm a new Explorer owner. I got me a 94 XLT and I love it!!! I hate the sound system so I have started to replacing things. I just did the HU, I put a nice Clarion CD deck in there. Thanks to this forum I realized that I needed to bypass the factory amp. I could not find any wiring diagrams so I spend several hours trying to figure this out.

Now I want to replace the speakers in the doors. I was amazed to see the odd size 6x8 speaker. This sucks cause I got 6x9's that I want to put in there.

Has anyone had any success installing 6x9's in the front and rear doors of the explorers. I sure there is a way. Any suggestions would be helpful.

If not perhaps I can use round speakers instead or maybe 5x7's. Give a newbie some help if possible.

5x7's and 6x8's both fit standard in the doors, round ones will require modification, but not nearly as much as the 6x9's

I have not seen anyone who has put 6x9's in there here, but I would imagine it would require a lot of modification, if for no other reason because the magnet on the 6x9's is bigger and I don't think that the speaker itself would fit in that location (so big)

dont evne bother get some infintys 6x8 they blow any 6x9 that i have seen pionerr kenwood the clarity is unbleavailbe i had some pioneer 6x9 in there but these things blow it out of the water and one of them hits harder then both of them and i got them of ebay for 36!!!!!! but thats just my opion

I really respect the infinity 6x8's for their quality (one of the reason I am going to get some infinity subs really soon) but I think that my pioneer 4-way 6x8's equal them in quality, and hit extremely hard. The pioneers are able to maintain their quality at the higest volume my hu goes to (unfortunately my crappy sony subs can't, but thats another story), i have never had infinity speakers in my car, but I would bet they could too.

But to reinforce his point and mine, there is little point in taking the time and extensively modifying your car for 6x9's, the 6x8's from pioneer/infinity or any of a half dozen other very reputable companies will sound very good, easily a match for comparable 6x9's.

No 6x8 hits hard. Also the pioneers are well known for having little bass responce. I'm sure there are tons of highs in any size that will put your $36 Infinity's to shame. 6x9's are very easy to put in the rear doors. I had them in my black Explorer. You just have to watch the magnet depth, unless you feel like cutting out a magnet hole, which I wouldn't reccomend. Have any experience with fiberglass? You could always do it ghetto and zip tie the speaker in and seal it with a strip of duct tape. Yeah, I know, but I have seen it done, and it didn't sound bad. I'd pull the plastic mounts from the rear doors, and live without the rear speakers for a few days, while I tried to 'glass a 6x9 in there.

If bass response is what you are after, wouldn't subs be a better choice than ANY door speaker.....

Yes, obviously. That was in response to your saying they hit extremely hard.

The point was that they hit pretty hard for door speakers, as well as some 6x9's I have heard (obviously not all) but compare the 20 minute anyone can do it installation of 6x8's to the hours (or days as you pointed out) installation of 6x9's that not many people can do. Then you come to realize, for the sound, 6x8's are just fine.

Please don't take that out of context and think I was saying 6x8's have as much bass response as a sub. They are loud and clear, can handle bass without distorting, and work well. Thats it.
