just a quick question -

was messing around as it's about time to take the truck in for service (and to finally replace those firestones) and ran across ford's ownerconnection.com, where I've apparently registered my explorer before but didn't give my VIN.

any reason why I shouldn't? does Ford have this info from the website available to them? if I'm bad one year or something and don't change my oil on time or something, will it show up somewhere that I should be worried about?

I can't think of any reason not to - just thought I'd ask

No they can;t track anything except your miles and when you change your oil is your business...mine hasn't been changed in 12,000 miles (it is synthetic Amsoil and i have replaced the filter) but ford never asks me about it.

ALso if they give you a choice of replacement tires, I would try to get a set of Michelins, but thats just my opinion. at my ford dealer they had Michelin or good year, but the goodyear offered were not as nice in my opinion. I got a set of Michilins from a different tire place other then ford and they refunded me and the tires are so much better then the wilderness AT's...better ride, better traction and lower noise!

yeah unfortunately I just found out last week that I can't buy / refund my own choice of tire anymore (and that I only have month or two do do any replacement).

I had been told by a dealer about 6 monts ago that I had until 2003. Was going to pick up the michelin cross terrains when the atx wore out, but oh well. I'm holding out for the michelin ltx now. no dealers have them in stock but they told me to try back next week...

otherwise it's bfg longtrails or nothing...

thanks for the notes about the fordconnection website. anybody have a better website you use? something maybe that links VIN to recall info or anything?

No refund if you buy them at a different location?! Has anyone else heard this? I think if the dealer doesn;t have the tires you want in stock you could get them from a different place. I mean I did because they didn;t have the cross terrains at my dealer. Cross terrain and LTX M/S are the 2 tires that i would choose between. I had BFG Longtrails, but they don;t compare to the Michelin.

Just a wprd of advice. Ford will ask for receipts for oil changes if they have to do internal warranty work to it. They can refuse warranty service if you cannot produce proper receipts and if it hasn't been changed at recommended intervals.

thanks for the tip regarding the oil changes.

and as for the refund at other locations - apparently they stopped doing that in november or december...

that's why I was bummed - I had planned on buying the cross terrains, but apparently the dealers here have never stocked those - you had to get them from a 3rd party during the refund window...

at least the ltx seem to be decent tires. from the little research I've done this week, most people seem to only have good things to say about them.

Your not serious about this are you? WHat if you chamge your own oil? How will they know when it was changed? Plus who's "recommended interval" do you have to follow? The recommended interval from Amsoil (the manufacture of the oil I use) says 25,000 miles or 1 year, with a filter change at 12,500 or at 6 months. I am just suprised they would refuse to do internal work if you don;t show reciepts. i mean all those SOHC engines with had the cam tensioner trouble they would fix it regardless I believe.....oh well...thats news to me if it happens thatway

Man thatsa bummer. anyway from the ratings I read the LTX M/S tire gets a similar rating to the Cross Terrain. I know there are other LTX models, but from what I read, the M/S model is your best bet for ride comfort and wet weather traction.

The cam thing was a problem they knew about so it doesn't count. i'm talking about something like a freak problem. like slinging a rod or something.and it's there recomeended interval and if you do it yourself that is fine they said. just keep your receipts and they won't check into it or anything to make sure it was on exact mileage or anything. they just said as long as it isn't like too extreme apart between changes.

Travis, i think he's talking about warrenty work for internal, am i right??

Yeah, they did stop that, i had a set that i got refunded the last day fortunatly.

Happy trails!!

Yeah you're right i'm alking about internal. It won't matter about anything else that's warrantied. The only time they would ever check your oil change schedule would be if the motor blew or something. Sorry for the misunderstanding I put out to you. I didn't mean it would void your warranty totally.

My boss ran the BFG's on his bvlazer and said they were good for off road, but he said since he doesn;t off road much anymore he told me not to get them. Tires are all opinion and peopl eneed to buy according to their use. The KO's would be good if you like to off road often, but if you stay on road, I am not sure if they are best suited because of the higher amount of road noise and stiffer ride.....as I said it's all opinion and use that matters...

Yes if we are talking about a road only application do not get the bfg at's. They are quite a bit louder than the michelin ltx m/s and have a MUCH stiffer sidewall (for my application anyway).

it's always a tradeoff when your 4wheeler is also your main commuting/highway vehicle too, isn't it?

Maybe I'll just have to buy a second one some day eh?

Yes, thats true. i have taken my Michelin Cross terrains off road and they did suprisingly well for an on-road all season tire
