Well, the subject speaks for itself really. When I'm hauling some of my more annoying friends, or children, they keep changing the volume, CD track, etc. This can be very distracting while driving. I've looked all over the manual, but I can't seem to find anything about disabling the controls. Is there some switch (or combination of buttons) that I can hit to turn these off when I have troublemakers in the back?

pull the panel and there should be a wiring harness connector in the back of the module. disconnect. Other option? wire cutters.

I thought i read somewhere that you press a couple buttons at the same time to disable the rear system. I put in an aftermarket headunit that isn't compatible so it's no longer an issue for me...

I know on my dad's old 96 you could disable the controls. I beleive you had to hold something like the 2 and 3 keys or the 3 and 4 keys but i dont remember. It's in the manual if it has the option to be turned off.

That's what i remember...there is an indicator in the display that shows that it has been done correctly. I, too, did it on my '96.

With the radio on, hold the 3 and 5 buttons at the same time. The little headphone display will go out, that's how you know the rear controls are off.

Yeah, 3 & 5 - if you ever need access to your owner's manual and don't have it nearby, you can download and save one (Ford Lincoln & Merc - 96 & newer) in pdf format here:

Wow - I stand corrected. Glad you didn't do it my way.....

also, if you press and hold 3&6, it will run diagnostics on the radio...

which will do....? i'm no familiar with diagnostics, also is there any way to get them working with aftermarket headunits?

what diagnostics do radios have??
never heard of that ever before.

Can that be done only for both the Premium and JBL sound systems systems?

The diagnostic routine is not for meant for customers use - it was an assembly plant aid, so that line workers could test the radio to be sure the system was hooked up and working properly.

It most DEFINATELY will not work with any piece of aftermarket equipment.

It only works on the factory premium systems, sorry, since that was the type system the thread question reffered to, figured people would know... It runs a diagnostic test of the radio, speakers and connections, handy if you think your (or mine, lol) teenage son has blown a speaker up with some fugees, making my kid rock sound like crap..lol, had to replace a door driver and the sub..

couldn't get that diagnostic thing to work, what state does the stereo need to be in for that to work?

It worked on mine. I had the X runnning with the radio on. Had my 13 year old with me at the time. He thought it was pretty cool the way the speakers were jumping around! :bounce:

Your question is not worded correctly, therefore, not clear. Are you asking if the controls will work on an aftermarket head unit or you asking if the diagnostics will work on an aftermarket head unit?

The rear controls and the steering wheel controls will both work with aftermarket head units. I did it with my Alpine HU in an Eddie Bauer.

Actually, the Ford radio diagnostic routines are NOT limited to Premium models only. The diagnostic routines are included in the software of all models past MY 2000.

As far as SWC and RSC working with aftermarket units, that will sometimes work, but you have to buy a separate interface from an aftermarket supplier - the Ford controls are NOT automatically compatible with aftermarket stereo systems.
