It looks like it can be a ***** getting to those bolts, especially the one on left. I was hoping i didnt have to take too much crap off to get to them.

Also, is there a way to tell if it IS the thermostat and not the water pump? Or is it just install a new one, then if still aint fixed, must be water pump.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Well I just did my t-stat a little while ago and yes it was tight getting those 3 bolts out. I used a closed end wrench and worked it slowly. Just be patient. As far as telling if the water pump is bad they usually will whine or start spewing water out the littel hole.

jack, can you write up a procedure on here on how you removed the t-stat? i have a 92, and, well, have never messed with the cooling of my ex. if you could, i would apprciate it a lot. thanks

Be very careful when you reinstall the termostat. It is easy to strip the threads. Check the specs for the bolt torque. You may also want to use a loc-tite product on the bolts.

Aw heck I'm not even sure I have enough beer in the house to sit down and do a write up on it. well I guess I could remove intake hose, then remove 3 bolts. Pull out t-stat then replace with new t-stat and re assemble. Dont forget to drain some fluid from radiator.

Naw I'm just kidding I will write something up cleaner cause I had to work the bolts slowly. I didn't have a problem with over tightening because I had to use the boxed or open end(i cant remember) of the wrench and work it slowly.

I used a 1/4" drive with two woggle joints on my socket to do it. The top two are that bad but the bottom one is real nasty. Drain some coolant out first and put a big catch pan underneath as you'll spill some when popping it off. Also don't forget a new gasket between the block and the new t-stat. There isn't much to this other than pulling off the plastic shroud and air intake, then the t-stat itself. Good luck!

YEEEEEHAAAAAW!

Replaced the thermostat today and its good to go! The needle is back on the N (in "normal") rite where it was before. I'll tell you what though, i never EVER want to do that job again!! That one bolt (top left) was a *****! It took me 20 min to take it off and another 20 to tighten it. I used an open end wrench (forgot what size, but i think it was metric) and it was just like a 1/4 turn at a time. BTW, it is pretty much manditory that you take off the throttle body, otherwise there is no way to even get to it.

Anyway, thanks all for help.
