I wanna do this too. I ripped the basket thing out to fix a squeak in there and now it won't go in there, so I figure why not put a sub back there? :D

Yeah I figured out if you pull real had the plastic box comes out .. just breaks it so it can't go back in haha .
I guess if I end up building one Im gonna have to take pics and measurements . Id like to squeeze a 12 back in it but I have some 10's also if the 12 won't fit . Ive measured it all before and I know I can get the airspace for the 10 just dunno if I can make enough room for a 12 .

You may be able to squeeze a 12 in there if you make it out of fiberglass. Just make the front out of 3/4"mdf and mold the back with fiberglass and attach it. Sounds easy, but it's a pain in the butt.

Trial and Error real soon guys!

Hey,

Funny you guys are thinking about building a custom sub enclosure for the rear pocket...I just started the project! This is what I've got going on so far...I went to the junkyard and purchased the ford premium sub enclosure in the back. Ive done some initial measurements and it looks like it will hold an 8" sub. It will take some cutting here and there...but over all, the sub should fit very nicely in the enclosure. If you guys are interested, Ill take pictures every step of the way and see if I can lay down the foundation. Anything is better than no sub, or in the premium sound set-up...better than the stock 6 1/2" sub. Email me if you guys have any questions!

I didn't do it myself, but I had one built out of fiberglass by a shop. The max airspace that you can get out of that location is 1.0 cu ft. I have a ten inch sub in there. I don't think you could fit a 12 inch sub because of the lack of depth. My a/d/s/ sub barely fits as it is, and it's only 4.5" deep. Good luck with your project. Fiberglass is definitely the way to go for this.

Mike, if you don't mind, how much did that cost you?

CHECK OUT THIS LINK!!!!

Before I got into this website, I would have never thought about playing with my X's engine, or trying to build custom kick panels, or anything beyond changing the oil.
Well, there's an audio shop near my in Boston where they sponsor kids and train them how to be good installers of car-audio. One of their projects was a 94 Explorer Sport, and the owner wanted everything stealth. Go to this link, click on 1994 Explorer, and check out the pics for this X. They build an amprack between the exterior skin and the plastic interior molding, in addition to building a sub enclosure for a 10" JL.
This has given me tons of new ideas/energy for when it warms up. Has anyone ever tried puttin a 10" on BOTH sides, and finding another home for the jack?

Enjoy!!!!!

Got a question about that setup, the amps are hidden and would have little airflow. Is this okay as long as you don't drive then hard or should you mount a fan near them to force some air across them

Jay, it was $400.

I've seen a set-up like this on a Tahoe, and the installer cut a slit in the top above the amps to get rid of the hot air. There were fans mounted on the bottom of the plastic molding to force cold air through.
Where did the cold air come from you ask? The Tahoe has an AC unit in the rear passenger panel. Too bad our Explorer's don't.
I guess doing the slit and fans would be enough anyway.

There is a way to stuff a 12 back there :)
Ill find it . There is no way Im gonna say no :)

Im sure the box will be strange but Ill get it .

Yikes, 400 bucks!

Could I do any cheaper on that maybe?

I actually wanted to do it cheaper than one I could buy if that's possible.

Well, the lowest I got quoted was $350 and the highest was $600 . If you know how to work with fiberglass, go for it! Even if you don't, this would be a great opportunity to learn.

Question? Ilike the riptop amp rack and i was wondering if I could do the same in my 97 merc ? The amps in question are the autobahn a4601xand the a2301x. The reasoning am posting this is that both amps are12.75inches wide . what do you think?
