is it plastic? look like alittle plunger? have an o ring around it? if so just throw it away, ford has been using this peice for years during assembly. It's useless.

Acutally, it's metal, maybe about 1 -1.5 inches long. I've been looking everywhere under the truck and can't find where it goes....Sorry, should have noted before, working on a 99 4.0SOHC with the 5r5ee.

It is a band anchor strut. Generally if you find one of those you have a broken band.... and will often find the broken part of the band strut as well. That piece is where the band adjusting bolt presses, and the larger end with the slit engages the band strut. You will notice that the smaller more massive end has a hole with a nice rounded end inside for the adjusting bolt..

What this means is that the tranny needs to be pulled and opened up to replace the broken band....UNLESS.... someone had backed out the adjusting screw and allowed this to fall out of place, in which case the band is probably NOT broken and this adjuster can be finagled back into position with the VB removed... or if the locknut was not tight I guess it is possible that the band adjusting screw could back out on its own during normal operation allowing this to fall into the pan, again this would mean the band is NOT broken. I have never seen this though. However...IF the band adjusting screw did not somehow back out, and/or someone did not monkey with it, this is BAD news bears time.... the only way to replace a broken band is internally via teardown. Once you go that far might as well rebuild it.

It bears investigating if the band is intact. I'll guess intermediate (rear most) band (since there are only two that use this piece I have a 50/50 chance of being right)...though either band can break. Somehow the intermediate seems to break more often.

Gotcha. But, if there was a band broken, would the car run? Aside from the slight shifting problem, it runs great. When going from 2-3, it'll stick for 1-3 secs. If I let my foot off the gas, it shifts. O/D light flashes. But, if I turn the truck off, turn back on, the problem goes away for about 10 minutes, then comes back. I think it might be time for a trip to the stealership unfortunately...

I am guessing no one has touched it, and the adjuster is not backed out. What you describe is a classic broken intermediate band. You shift from 2nd to 4th when you let up on the gas. Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings.

Well, that also may explain why I got such a great deal on the Explorer! Hmmm, I'm going to have to examine my options. Like you said before, the only way to fix a broken band is a teardown. If I'm going to get that into it, I might as well have a new trans put in. Thanks for the advice, I do appreciate it!

Sooo, anybody know a good place to get a 5R5EE tranny in or near MD??
