I recently had a spark plug blow out of the passenger side furthest back spark plug hole on a 2002 4.6L. I have a couple of options to fix and one option is to use a product from Dorman. A link to the cylinder head repair kit can be found here: http://www.amazon.com/Dorman-42025-Master-Cylinder-Repair/dp/B000TYVU1U

Apparently Napa makes a very similar part.

Has anyone used the Dorman or Napa product and if so what has been your experience with it?

Had the same thing happen to me only on #7. I think it occurred because I did not use the torque spec (laziness). However mine did not take out the threads as most have posted. I was able to thread mine in and torque to spec. I see nothing wrong with trying it for the price.

The question I have is: Once you do this must you continue to buy Dorman special plugs (9/16 socket) or can standard (5/8) replacement plugs be used?

I am going to get a kit and keep in the truck just in case.

I will have to purchase the special plug in the future. The good thing though is the plug is an Autolite Revolution HT plug so it's not an unknown brand at least.

The other method to repair the hole is this way:http://www.timesert.com/html/triton-install.html

That way is about a $450 dollar touch from Ford as you need the special Time-Sert install tool. I had a look at the tool at my local Ford dealer and if the Dorman solution doesn't work, there is still going to be lots of casting left for Ford to cut a new hole for the Time-Sert fix.

I may even fix and unload the Ex for an F150. I'm pulling a 5000lb trailer (I have tow package) but the 4.6 is working.

You can get a kit from your local Ford dealer that will allow you to use the factory plug, its the same kit hey use for the repair. I comes with all the drill bits and and tap, as well as a threaded insert that is installed in the head. I did this repair quite a few times when I worked for Ford. Its kind of pain to do it on F-series and Expedition, never did one on an Explorer. Just remember to use alot of grease on the Tap and drill bits to keep the shavings out of the cylinder.

I used the HeliCoil Sav-a-thread Spark Plug kit to repair the plug hole in my Kawasaki/Gravely and it worked like a charm. Still good a year later.

i work in auto repair and yes helicoil work
only problem is acces to drill out thread
there kit just for plug repair the 3 diff size short med and long thread insert
make sure you blow out the cyl get particle in chamber out
and can use original spark plug
i like to use jd weld on insert as extra mesure
ps not on the inner tread lol

The Sav-a-thread spark plug kits do not require drilling and the instructions say to use red silicone RTV, which surprised me. On the other hand, if you've tried disassembling anything put together with red silicone it darn near impossible! But I would have figured red thread locker to be recommended.

I have used the TimeSert kit. It works really well, As long as you have access to the spark plug hole.

Sorry to bump an old thread but does anyone know where i can buy the timesert kit locally on Long Island NY? My girlfriend's mountaineer blew a plug last night and i need to get her back rolling again.

I sent you an e-mail earlier. I had the timesert professionally installed. The other option I tried didn't work.

This is the kit I tried: http://www.amazon.com/Dorman-42025-M.../dp/B000TYVU1U

I just recently had the spark plug in cylinder 7 blow out of my 02 X 4.6. Coming out of a parking lot onto a highway and puff....got to the parts store and they told me that the Triton motors that FORD built were Fords rendering of the Hemi motors. However, Ford ####ed up and used aluminum heads...that is why the spark plugs blow because there is too much compression against them. Anyway, I got lucky...My brother works at a Ford dealership and we installed a heli coil since it took the threads with it when it blew. Bought a new spark plug and installed it, and everything is working again...Thank god.

Has NOTHING to due with aluminum heads. Just about ALL heads are aluminum these days. The problem is that there are only about 4 threads in the spark plug hole. The newer 4.6 engines had even more spark plug issues because of a goofy 3 piece spark plug design.

Tip for the heilcoil insert

When you go to tap the the new threads, you dont want any metal shaving getting in your motor... So grease up the tap with any type of thick grease to catch the metal shavings before they fall into your motor! It works! Ive done it!
