Ive been thinking about regearing my explorer lately and i know how much its costs so im wondering what it would cost just to swap out an axle from an similar year X that was equipped with the tow package. So i was wondering if anyone has the axle code which means 4.10 and the limited slip.

My main questions are how much approximately would it cost to obtain the axle and how difficult would it be to do the swap. What kinds of tools would i need?

i wouls think it would be cheeper to just regear

D2 is 4.10 LS. If you can get the axle for under $300 it would probably be beneficial to swap axles rather than regear. You just run into problems with condition of the found parts, etc.

Back when I regeared my 3.08 equipped 4 cylinder Ranger, I paid $175 for a 3.73 axle. I swapped my brakes over since they were fairly new and I knew the condition. It took me and a friend about 2 or 3 hours to swap everything. Should be similar on the Explorer. If you can get the whole axle for less than regearing, then depending on the value of your labor, it could be cheaper to swap the entire rear end.

Those numbers are incorrect for explorers... go here:
