Anyone have any information on supercharging or turbo charging a 3rd generation Explorer 4.0L?

Any information or links would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Rich

Theyre used to be a production supercharger on explorerexpress.com but has since been removed. I dont think they sold many since they were going for around $5,000.

I saw a guy on here that took an STS universal turbo system and adapted it for the Explorer 4.0. I'd like to see something under the hood and not in the back under the bumper.

Personally I would like a supercharger and I would be willing to pay $5000 when the time is right. For that amount of money I could probably take it some place and get a custom turbo set up put in. Anyway for now I will stick to the little things to get a little more HP here and there. Hopefully I can find a way to put some real power to the ground though!

After seeing the 5.4 being swapped into the explorer maybe you should forget about the boosted 4.0. For about 6k you can swap in a b6 12 valve diesel and have one outrageous ex. My buddy just finished his f150 12valve swap today and man is that thing sick all bolt in for the f150 so it shouldnt be bad for ours. He wants me to do the mounty so start saving and once you get enough saved I can give you his number. Maybe we can get ours done around that same time.

Diesel now that would be perfect! The only issue I read about in researching the diesel idea is weight issues and too much torque? But I am up for looking into this, my next vehicle in 3-4 years is going to be a diesel truck and to have a diesel X to go with it would be the sh*t!

That's my dream haha a 4pott oil burner x. All that torque you could roast your tires on command. Probably make the x feel like a shoebox with its acceleration.

My buddies 12 valve f150 is so sick and he is running the factory rear and an zf6 tranny out of a f350. It's a regular cab six foot bed step side up on 38s and in 4 high it can demolish all 4 tires! You will have to upgrade your front springs because the 4.6 weights in at almost 600lbs and the 5.9 12valve is right at 900 lbs. After my sas is done I'm gonna look at going diesel so I can get my fuel milage back up to where I like it.

My diesel mountaineer idea all started when my girl and I went to trade the mounty and my bmw for a 2009 dodge 3500 6.7 diesel. Yeah last week I almost traded it in till my girl said why don't you make the mountaineer diesel. I just laughed and said I don't think that will work. Then after a few calls I found a kit to swap it over to a diesel. Well now I still have the mounty but not diesel yet

Wow I almost traded my X in on a 2005 5.9 Cummins last week also. I decided to wait until my wifes 2010 Escape is paid off and then it's my turn to get me a new Diesel. I would like to stay Ford but will see whats on the market come 2014 or so! In the mean time a Diesel X project sounds like fun!

Best thing about the 12valve is very very little electronics so its a one day swap with the conversion kit.

I have been wanting a diesel for the past few years but really hate to get rid of the mounty.

Explorer + Turbo Diesel = <3

Macknos94 - Do you have the information or link to the conversion kit......you really have my wheels turning!!

What about the transmission, there no way our tranny will hold all that torque. Now with all that said it gonna be very costly to do this and will it be worth it in the end? My wheels are turning though!

Today I pulled my f250 beside the gutted engine bay of the mounty and compared the 2. It would be amazing to have a 7.3 in a 3rd gen. That being said, good luck with a diesel swap. Your pockets must be pretty deep lol

12 valves go very cheap these days so with keeping your eyes open you can find them for 400-800 bucks then the conversion kit that includes the trans adaptor plate and all the needed parts is 3300 so for around 4k you can have a engine that will out last the whole truck lol.

You can use your tranny but I would recommend building it with a custom torque converter. I ordered all my tranny parts to make it bullet proof along with a new torque converter. They have been sitting at my house for the past year and a half. All together the torque converter was 900 and the rebuild kit with hd bands ran me 375. So the tranny part isnt bad.

Transfer case im still trying to figure out but I have manual hubs on my truck right now so I will have power going straight to my rear solid axle 90% of the time.

One issue I have now is the 4.88 gears I have installed right now are useless with a diesel engine so I will be going back to 3.73 gears.

Also if your sticking with the stock ifs/irs setup if go with the 3.9 cummins and enjoy the 25-30mpg but still have 265ft. Lbs. Tq. Then if you want a little more just crank the fuelpump up and say hello to 300-320 foot lbs tq.

I'm gonna order some stuff for it once my suspension is done. So far im about 12000 in on my sas so the engine swap will have to wait

Oh yeah forgot to post that nick gets all his diesel swap stuff from fordcummins.com

I think I might lean towards the 3.9 cummins but this project is so in the future for me. My pockets are not deep yet haha what car does a 3.9 come out of?

Mostly bread vans and that type of vehicle if you can find a newer bt4 they are 130hp and 355 ft. Lbs. Tq. I thought they were only rated at 265 tt lbs but holy Hell 355! I'll be looking at a newer bt4 now and the bt4 will look like a lawnmower engine in our trucks. They are tiny but weigh in at 745 lbs vs.4.6 at 600lbs

wow cant believe i came across this, i was sitting around the other day and thought man how bad ass would it to put a 5.9 in the x puffin black smoke everywhere lol but it seemed reeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaalllllyyyyyy far fetched so i just remembered about sts turbos. Has any progress been made on any part of this thread, engine swap, sts, or SAS????
and if not does anybody have anything thing to add???????????

I think Macknos lost his mounty in a garage fire. And as for SAS'd 3rd gens I did come across one in Ogden a couple months ago...
