My Explorer now has 35k kms on it and I'm about to embark on a 5k km trip to the US next week. I decided to pull the oem cabin filter as I know they can get pretty dirty fast. The filter wasn't too bad though, but I thought the filter media wasn't a very tightly knit material. It is tight enough to catch large particles but I could see dust and soot getting through. Some of the aftermarket filters I've seen look like they may be better at filtering smaller particles. I realize it is a trade-off between filtering and air-flow though. Just curious if anyone has used an aftermarket filter on their Explorer ?.

You have a 2012 model and already have 35,000 Kms (21,700 mi) on it? I guess it doesn't sit around much.:)
The manual says the cabin air filter should be changed at 32,000 km or 20,000 miles. I haven't checked mine out yet but I assume the dealer does when I get the oil change done but then I've only gone 9700 kms.
I think I'd stick with an OEM filter though.

yeah I drive the truck a lot for work, and we do annual trips down south in the summer which adds a good 5k - 6k kms on one 2 week trip. I've got to keep the truck for about 6-7 years, at this rate it will have 300k kms, wonder what my MFT will be like after that time, probably be dead at that point , lol.

I wouldn't count on the dealer checking your filter on an oil change it is a bit of work getting to it behind the glove compartment. I'd say changing it at 32k kms is a good idea, mine wasn't too bad at 35k kms. They might be willing to check it at the 32k km mark.

Looks like an aftermarket filter isn't easily available, I've looked all over for one. So the factory filter might be our only option at this point until more companies develop one. The micron air ones I've seen for other vehicles look to be more restrictive than the factory type, so they may not work as well in terms of air flow if they ever release one for the explorer.

2011 Ex LTD. When I was in for an oil change dealer said to change cabin filter, then technician said there was not a cabin filter in the vehicle. Does anyone know if my 2011 has a cabin filter? I have 302A pkg.

Yes there is behind the glove box
