I am thinking of going 4.10s in my V-8 AWD...

after looking around I beleive someone said on here that I need front gears for a jeep that has a dana 60....

I was wondering what type of rpms you guys are running on the road...

You will need standard rotation gears for a Dana 35 axle. These gears are most commonly found in the rear end of jeeps.

You should be able to get the 4:10 gears from the front of a Ranger. I have 4:10 gears in my Ranger with a 1999 Explorer V8 / 4R70W / AWD case. The pick up is alot better than my 1998 Mountainer with 5.0L and 3:73 gears.

I haven't calibrated my tach since the conversion, but I think ~2700-2800RPM @80MPH. 16.5-17 MPG average.

BTW, I saw a few of your other posts. How did you get 400HP out of you Explorer engine? I am looking to swap out the 5.0 for a 5.8L, but there are a few clearance issues, leading me to look at other alternatives.

Thanks!

400hp is pretty easy.....

Cam, headers, exhaust, supercharger, tuning, chip, fuel system...... talk to the guys at www.corral.net

they will tell you what you need.

what truck are you thinking of going 5.8??? the ranger or mountaineer....???

I am really thinking of a 5.8 for my explorer....
what type of clearance issues are you having??? have you tried one yet... the blocks are pretty much the same...... just a little higher i beleive.

The valve covers get real close, especially on the pass side. I cannot determine how I would service my rockers with the engine in the truck (I don't think I could get the covers off with the tight clearance). Headers are also another concern, drivers side in particular.

Two other issues with the 351: 1) The DIS cam position sensor will fit in the 351 block and ride on the cam, but the oil pump shaft on a 351 is larger. I may be able to custom make shaft or run with 302 pump. 2) The Explorer oil pan will not fit, as the 351 has larger main bearings and thus a larger half round clearance for the rear main bearing in the pan. I suppose I could use a steel explorer pan and weld in the 351 rear bearing area.

My plans with the windors would be a late model roller block or convert a non-roller, stock crank/rods, TFS TW heads and TFS or GT40 lower/Explorer upper. Definitely retain the EEC-V and DIS from 5.0L. Custom headers would take some time, but would be worth it in the end.

I want to get good low end torque and not run premium fuel, so a supercharger or high compression 5.0L based engine are out.

Let me know if you go forward with a 5.8L. I will do the same.
