Which way does the atf go? when it leaves the tranny, does it go into the external cooler in front of the radiator first or into the cooler built in the radiator?
You have tranny lines that run to an external cooler as well as into the radiator? Are you sure that 'eternal cooler' isn't for the A/C system? I don't know of any Explorer with a factory external tranny cooler.
Perhaps Aldive (Al Franklin) will chime in. He's done a lot on this subject (external coolers & filters).
yeah, I don't know if I have a towing package either!?!? There was no hitch or anything which would lead to this assumption having the towing package when I bought the Explorer...
I am the original owner and still have the sticker which does not mention a tow package. I assume the tow package came with a tranny cooler and wiring harness. My X has the tranny cooler, but No wire harness for a trailer (I added it later).

yeah, I meant something like wiring or anything else. I mean it doesn't really matter to me. I don't plan on towing anything soon anyway, but it is probably good to have. Is the transmission then different, too? Or does it just mean external tranny cooler?
I bought my 98 used but the original sticker was included in the paper work. The sticker says I have the "Trailer Tow Prep" package. Now on my truck I have a tranny cooler and the wiring for a trailer so I assume this is what is meant by trailer tow prep. This wiring ends in a round electrical connector located under the rear of the truck right around the rear driver's side tail light.
If you want to tow something light all you need to do I put a ball in the bumper and purchase the jumper wiring (I think mine cost around $15 for etrailers .com). This jumper has a round connector on one end and fits into the wiring by the tail light. The other end has the four pronged flat connector to hook up to the wiring of the trailer.
Mine's installed after the tranny cooler. You might want to try summit racing. I seem to remember that I paid $30 for the permacool set-up without the temp gauge although that was at least a year ago prices.
The permacool comes with instructions and mentions various makes and models of filters that can be used. Basically you can use the same as your oil filter. I've used Motorcraft FL1A but prefer to use Purolator PureOne PL 30001...It's a bluish purple color and is much less noticible than the white FL1A...I've got mine mounted in the pass. wheel well and the white filter sticks out from a mile away.
