Hi, I've got mixed signals from my Chilton and Ford manual. One says use type F and the other says use Mercon. I want to switch to synthetic to see if it might quiet my tranny down a little. Should I go with a Mercon, Dextron Synthetic, or should I just go with a full synthetic (that doesn't say Mercon) ? I know everyone suggests Amsoil, but I have been looking at the Castrol here locally. What do you suggest?

Since your transmission is a manual, it doesn't have hydraulically actuated clutch packs like in an automatic. Those paper frictions are sensitive to different kinds of fluids. Your transmission uses metal gears, so I don't think there is much of a difference between different kinds of fluids. I know that in a differential, the thicker oils might deaden some gear noise, and possibly keep everything cooler, since the thicker oils stick to the gears more. The thinner oils run off faster.

I use Mobil 1 synthetic in my manual. I've tried MANY other fluids, but none made the tranny shift as smooth as the Mobil 1. The fluid doesn't come out nearly black like it used to with other fluids which is probably a good thing;)

Ok cool. Thanks you guys. So, Rick, does the Mobil 1 Synthetic say anything on it about Mercon or does it just say Synthetic Tranny Fluid on it?

There's only one type of Mobil 1 tranny fluid.
