I have a 1998 Ford Explorer which I have had from new. I recently Had a new motor installed and now have an engine ping under load. The exhaust and cat converters were also replaced. The MAF sensor was cleaned but I wondering if this could still be the problem. From what I have read it sounds like the MAF or the anti knock sensor. Any help on how to work out problem appreciated

Anyone out there able to help me with this

Welcome to the forum! If you are getting a ping it could be from an exhaust leak. I would recheck the torque on all the bolts

any DTCs?

I assume that you have the SOHC V6 and that your fuel meets the octane requirement. Do you have any diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs)?

It is possible that your knock sensor is defective and the PCM is not retarding the ignition timing but I would look for other causes first.

Have you checked your fuel pressure to see if it meets specifications? See Ford Explorer Ranger Fuel pressure test procedure

Have you tested your MAF sensor output? See MAF Sensor Test Procedure

If you have lean DTCs check for intake leaks. See Lean condition procedure

Make sure your crankshaft position sensor is aligned correctly. If off your ignition timing could be advanced causing detonation. Clean the connector by disconnecting and reconnecting a couple times.

Make sure your spark plugs are the correct heat range and gapped correctly. Do they show any signs of lean burning or detonation?
