Well, Ive done some searching and couldnt come up with exactly what I was looking for. Here is my issue.

I have a 2000 Explorer Sport, OHV. When in A4x4, it will work fine as long as I am moving at least a few MPH when traction is lost. But, if I am setting still and traction is lost right from the start, it acts like it is engaging and disengaging quicly and continues to do that with clunking noises. 4x4H and 4x4L work fine (with the exception of a loud clunk when 4x4L engages). If I put the switch into 4x4H, it engages perfectly from a stop, no matter what the traction (ie: ice). I have read somewhere that there is a speed sensor in the transfer case or transmission that could be the culprit? Any suggestions otherwise?

Bump, No one?

Sounds like normal operation to me, it is applying the clutch in transfercase when needed and creates the noise and feeling. 4WD locks the clutch and therefore no noises.

So the engage/disengage very quickly over and over and leaving me stuck is normal for the A4x4 Setting? Kinda makes sense, because realisticly if your setting on ice or a pile of snow you should just lock it into 4x4. But just didnt think that it should make the clunking noises like somethings banging.

I always put in 4x4 high if im doing any kind of snowy weather.
