I just got a 91 explorer xlt. I think there is something wrong with the auto hubs and need to know how to take them off and clean them(pics would be helpful). The problem is the truck feels "sticky" especially at low speeds. sometimes, it'll stop when gently coasting (at a driveup window or something) and it'll feel like it releases then catches again continuosly and just feels like it's straining even at highway speeds. Lately, in this frigid weather, it will completely lock up when I first start. The front wheels will lock and I have to reverse and go forward a couple of times before they release. And no, its not in 4x4 when this happens. Anyhelp would be appreciated.

Doesn't really sound like an auto hub problem. Here's a thread on how to clean them: http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=120060&highlight=clean+auto+hubs Basically, take off front wheel, pull hub (says 4x4 on it), fill with auto trans fuild or whatever, let sit, dump out.

"Catching and releasing" may be an uneven rotor (needs to be surfaced) or maybe a sticking caliper/pad. Parking brake could be partly engaged. Take off the wheels and poke a few things until something doesn't look/sound right :)

Do a search on here for how to check for a wheel bearing problem.

thanks, it turns out to be the parking break locking up. It's too darn cold here to work on it so I'm bringing it to my friend/mechanic on tuesday. I appreciate the input
